Mini Reviews : Wednesday

I have always been a fan of the original Addams Family, at least the movieverse version with Raul Julia   and Angelica Houston as Gomez  and Morticia Addams. And who can forget Christina Ricci as the irrepressible Wednesday Addams, or Christopher Lloyd's Uncle Fester? Dark Gothic humor at its finest. So imagine how excited I was to learn about Netflix new series spotlighting the Wednesday Addams character. Now granted that newcomer Jenna Ortega had huge shoes to fill, with Ricci's portrayal so firmly engrained in our pop collective. Jenna didn't just show up. She totally owned the character and captured the deadpan, nonchalant mood including the unblinking, soul piercing gaze. She even choreographed a dance that went viral on social media! What's more interesting is that we get the original Wednesday Addams Christina Ricci in a meaty role. We get Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia, Gwendolyn Christie as the school principal Larissa  Weems, Emma Myers as Enid Sinclair, and Hunter Doohan as Tyler Galpin. The story is markedly darker and less comedic, playing out like a detective drama following a murder mystery, with supernatural beings of course. The story follows Wednesday moving to a new school, Nevermore Academy, which also happens to be her mother's  Alma mater. Following a bizarre series of brutal slayings, Wednesday traces the breadcrumbs left behind by the perpetrator. The story has some clever detours to throw us off the scent of the actual killer and the puppet master behind the scenes. I highly recommend watching the series.
